Katie Smyth is a freelance performer and private flute teacher in Jefferson City, Missouri. She currently holds the principal flute position in the Southside Philharmonic Orchestra--an emerging chamber orchestra in Mid-Missouri, performs with her flute and guitar duo Howard & Smyth and keeps busy with her growing flute studio.

In 2014, Katie began an exciting journey as a copywriter and digital marketer at Caledon Virtual and transitioned to High 5 Communications in 2016. She gained a wealth of experience in social media, website design, copywriting, and digital ad placement. Katie has used these skills to promote local arts organizations such as the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra (web design/development and social media posting) and the Southside Philharmonic Orchestra (web design/development, social media posting, graphic design, social ad placement).
2015 marked her fourth season with the Missouri Symphony as rotating Assistant Principal Flute and Piccolo. Katie also served as the woodwind coach for the Missouri Symphony Orchestra Conservatory and Camps.
In 2013 Katie completed her Masters in Flute Performance at the University of Missouri-Columbia where she studied with Alice K. Dade. Prior to her studies at the University of Missouri, Katie taught private flute lessons and secondary instrumental music in the St. Louis area for five years. During this time, Katie remained active in performing and served as a board member and Adult Flute Choir Director in the Flute Society of St. Louis. A highlight of her tenure with the FSSL was winning the 2009 Concerto Competition and studying with Shelly Monier.
Katie earned a Bachelor of Music Education in 2005 from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri and studied flute with Dr. Jill Heyboer and Kathy Cowens. Additionally, she performed in masterclasses with John Bailey, Ervin Monroe, and Laurel Ann Mauer, was a member of the MSU Flute Quartet, and held the piccolo seat in the Wind Ensemble.
